June 2009 - Legionella bug found in hospital
Legionella bacteria has been found in the surgical and maternity blocks at a hospital in Bedfordshire.

The bacteria was found at the Luton and Dunstable Hospital as part of a routine check for Legionella, which grows in warm water.

However, there have been no cases of Legionnaires' disease.

The hospital has closed showers and baths in the areas affected and alternative arrangements for washing have been made for patients.

The hospital's chief executive, Stephen Ramsden, said: "Patient safety is our highest priority and the baths and showers in the areas will therefore remain closed for the next couple of days while decontamination work is being carried out."
